Tools & Talismans #38 Gaëlle Boissonard
Meet artist and Illustrator Gaëlle Boissonard — her line work and color and her illustrations of women are completely beguiling and I've longed for a reason to be in touch with her for quite some time, Tools & Talismans became that reason.
Un pinceau chinois: Il me vient de mes parents, j'y tiens beaucoup. Il fait partie des objets qu'ils vendaient dans leur boutique, il y a de longues années. Cette boutique était dédiée à l'artisanat français, mais ils y vendaient aussi beaucoup d'objets venus de Chine (céramique, vanneries, chapeaux...), du Vietnam (céramique, vanneries), d'Iran (des céramiques), d'Afghanistan (de la laine). J’ai grandi parmi ces objets et je crois qu'ils ont beaucoup influencé mon travail et mon goût pour la matière, l'artisanat. J'utilise ce pinceau pour épousseter mes peintures, notamment quand je gomme ou quand je ponce la couleur.
A Chinese Brush: It was given to me by my parents, and I like it very much. It’s one of the objects they sold in their shop many years ago. Their shop was dedicated to the French craft industry, but they also sold many pieces from China, Vietnam, Iran and Afghanistan. I grew up among these objects and I think they’ve influenced my work and my taste for the materials I use in my work. I use this brush to dust off my paintings, especially when I erase or sand the paint.
Les deux outils avec des pointes de fer et des manches en bois me viennent de ma maman. Ceux sont des outils qu'elle utilisait il y a plus longtemps encore (50 ans?), quand elle était elle-même dessinatrice pour un catalogue de vente par correspondance qui s'appelait Manufrance. Elle dessinait des objets, re-dessinait parfois sur des photos. J'utilise le plus fin pour gratter, graver, et le plus large pour prélever des pigments dans leurs pots quand je prépare mes couleurs.
The two tools with the metal points and wooden handles were given to me by my Mum. These are tools that she used a long time ago, maybe even 50 years ago, when she herself was a draftswoman for a mail order catalogue called Manufrance, she used todraw these objects and sometimes she’d draw right on the photos themselves. I use the small end to scrape and burn, and the wider end to collect pigments from their pots when I prepare my colors.
Les galets sont quelques-uns parmi plein, il y en a partout, les plus beaux, les plus singuliers ont été trouvé par mon fils cadet.
The stones are just a sample, there are many of them all around and the most beautiful, the most remarkable ones have have been found by my youngest son.
Les deux fuseaux, petits objets en bois de buis tourné, me viennent également de ma maman. Ils évoquent pour moi à la fois le travail de bois, dans une finesse magique, et donc le rapport à mon père, et le fil, que ma mère travaillait beaucoup, et que j'utilise aussi très souvent dans mes dessins, en intégrant de la couture à la peinture. Ce sont des fuseaux de dentellière, là encore passion pour la magie de la transformation de la matière qu'est l'artisanat.
The two bobbins — small turned objects made of boxwood — also come from my mom. They evoke for me both the strength and delicacy of the wood, and a connection to my father; and the thread that my mother used so much, and that I too use in my drawings, integrating sewing into my painting. These are the tools of the lace-maker — again that passion for the magical transformation of materials by the artisan.
Les tampons en bois, ce ne sont que quelques-uns parmi ceux que j'accumule dans l'atelier. Tous types de tampons, postaux, publicitaires, d'écolier, de typographe. Ou encore ceux que je grave dans la gomme. J'aime ces techniques d'impression, les mêler au dessin, avec une attirance particulière pour toux ceux qui comportent des mots.
The blocks of wood are but a few of the ones that I’ve collected in my workshop. All types of blocks: postal, advertising, student and typographer. Even those that I carve in an eraser. I like to use these printing techniques and mix them with my drawing, and have a particular love for the ones which contain words.
Il y a aussi mon sceau, gravé dans une pierre prévue à cette effet, de la stéatite. Je l'ai gravé il y a déjà quelques années, afin de pouvoir signer mes images destinées au cartes postales de la manière la plus discrète possible, mais en même temps avec l'envie que cette signature soit intégrée à la peinture et devienne un élément qui participe à sa composition, indispensable. Je l'utilise soit directement sur le papier de mes dessins, soit sur divers types de papier qu'ensuite je recoupe puis que je viens coller sur mes peintures.
There’s also my stamp (or my chop) that’s engraved into a piece of soapstone. I had it engraved a few years ago, in order to be able to sign my images in as subtle a way as possible; but at the same time wanting to integrate my signature into the painting, so it becomes an element of the composition. I use it either directly on my drawings or on different types of paper that I then cut again before I stick them onto my paintings. It’s essential to me and my work.
Il y a enfin un petit rouleau de bande gommée, trouvé aux puces, parce que j'adore l'objet, mais aussi le côté translucide de papier collant, et que ça me renvoie au collage, que j'utilise toujours avec parcimonie mais aussi avec beaucoup de plaisir.
There’s a small roll of eraser, found at the flea market, because I love it, but also the translucent side of the sticky paper that I use for sticking things together, always used sparingly but with a lot of fun.
J'aime les objets et les matières qui ont une histoire, un vécu, et j'ai besoin de m'en entourer. Il y a en plus un livre de Prévert, un poète qui m'accompagne depuis l'adolescence, et dont je continue de boire les mots. J'ai besoin de sa présence à mes côtés.
I like objects and materials which have a history and a life, and I need to surround myself with them. There is a book by Prévert, a poet which has accompanied me since my adolescence, and whose words I continue to drink in. I need its presence at my side.
Il y a enfin une boîte de cachous, emblématique petit bonbon à la réglisse pour les petits moments de creux au cours des longues journées passées à l'atelier.
Finally there is a box of cachous, small licorice candy for moments of down time during the long days spent in the workshop.
