Tools & Talismans #8 — Aimee Dolich

Color. It's Aimee Dolich's primary tool for creating. If you've seen her work, it's filled with hand lettered messages and color blocked areas, and hand illustrated "doodles" and her signature line work. In a modern world where we are all seeking out our true identities and looking to define ourselves in a slightly different way then our peers, Aimee excels — and tells us who she is and what she stands for with her pens and pencils and brushes and paints.

I had to get out ALL of my colors for this one, and dove head first into Aimee’s world, with color and joy.

My favorite tool, above all, is color! Whether it is in paints, on walls, in inks, in pictures, or on objects, color energizes & inspires me to get moving. Pens (especially felt-tip Flairs) and papers of all kinds come next: they are the most basic of art supplies and are always so willing to take snapshots of my ideas without complaining. The mini dictionary represents my love of words and all things tiny. The phone is my link to the outer world; I love that I can connect with so many people every day through photos and words. The coffee mug was too large to squeeze in, so I drew it; rest assured I couldn't compose even a thought without that first morning cup. The dala horse stamp simply makes me happy and I don't really know why. I'm never without an eraser because I'm very good at making mistakes, but I also like to fix them. The scissors feed my need to take things apart, alter & rearrange things. The yarn I use for crochet work when I'm upset or at odds with myself or the world; each stitch helps me feel like I'm holding it together.

My talismans: most are too big to include here, but two of these represent things that I must see or use on a daily basis. The beads I purchased while traveling, and this is how I enjoy acquiring most of my jewelry & trinkets: I like to connect objects with experiences. And the other is a drawing from my daughter; I love to collect & display artwork from my girls and my friends. It inspires me daily to see what comes from the minds and hands of other people.

Tools & Talismans is a personal painting project where I’m documenting {in watercolor} the tools and talismans of 100 different women — creators and healers, thinkers and makers, wordsmiths and visionaries. Join me for a year of Tools & Talismans — I'll be sharing a new painting with you every Wednesday.
