Tools & Talismans #15 Lisa Field

Each of these paintings has held a gift for me — an unexpected gift — and in this one it was the reflection of Lisa in her sunglasses, while she took the photo for this painting. See it?

I study each photo quite a bit before I start painting, and in the looking and the sketching and looking again {all before the paint comes out} I often find something that surprises me. Once I saw it the reflection was so obvious, and yet my had eye passed over it so easily, so many times. And so I found my way into the painting, through that mirrored lens, through her reflection, through Lisa’s line of sight.

My life is about beauty and connection. I need to connect to the natural world on a daily basis. My sunglasses are always on my face and represent to me, my sight. My phone is both the camera to capture the beauty I see, and also the portal to my family and community near and far, those that keep me grounded on this earth. My notebook is where I can transcribe what I see, giving voice to the sensory experiences and stories that often overwhelm me.

The talismans that surround my home, the sage, the circular driftwood, the crystal and the bell are reminders of the sacred; things collected on the mountain, by the sea and far away in my travels. These things help me to recall that I am All and everything, of everywhere, belonging to a divine universe that is unlimited in its divinity and grace.

The necklace is one I wear most days, and it reminds me of my golden line, that which defines my core values and how I move through the world with integrity and respect for myself and others.

Lisa Field is a healer who writes and takes pictures. Everything she does is in service to beauty and connection with the goal of loving more, being happy and experiencing greater freedom inside our hearts and in the world.

Tools & Talismans is a personal painting project where I’m documenting {in watercolor} the tools and talismans of 100 different women — creators and healers, thinkers and makers, wordsmiths and visionaries. Join me for a year of Tools & Talismans — I'll be sharing a new painting with you every Wednesday.
