Tools & Talismans #46 Adair Lara

The dog is a border collie named Casey who, thankfully, drags me out to the San Francisco sidewalks for a walk many times a day. The iPhone is my camera. I use it to exchange funny messages and photos with my sisters: “This is me now.”  And I can make calls with it. And email myself reminders — when I get a notion about the book I’m writing on those walks I email it to myself.

The laptop is really a typewriter, as it’s for writing. The reading glasses I wear around my neck from waking to sleep are part of a look I’m cultivating, one that includes uncombed hair and hoodies. Also, I can’t read without them, and Jesus Christ do I like to read. (See piles of books). I teach memoir but read mostly novels. The ping pong paddle is from my table upstairs. I’m mad for Ping-Pong and pay people to come over and play it with me. I regard that as an excellent use of cash. The wine is there because I like wine, red in particular, and I cling to the new studies that say how good it is for you, and how non-wine drinkers rarely survive past seven years of age.

Tools & Talismans is a personal painting project where I document {in watercolor} the tools and talismans of 100 different women — creators and healers, thinkers and makers, wordsmiths and visionaries. Join me for a year of Tools & Talismans — I'll be sharing a new painting with you every Wednesday.

I'd love to talk about creating illustrations for you! Do you have a project that needs some illustration? Think my work might be a good fit? Get in touch, I'd love to talk about your project with you!
